Descendant of the crane review7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The plot is convoluted and the cast unwieldy, with characters coming and going in their significance Akira in particular feels wholly undeveloped and seems to exists solely for Sherlock Holmes–like displays in his investigation and occasionally as a romantic interest for Hesina. Meanwhile, she must manage an increasingly unstable kingdom as people begin to blame soothsayers more and more for their bad luck, and when one of Hesina’s advisors frames a soothsayer for the king’s death, violence threatens to destroy the peace her father was determined to keep. The seer points Hesina to Akira, a current convict but also an apparently brilliant investigator, whose revelations only confuse Hesina further about her father’s past and throw everyone in her life under suspicion. Magic was banned, which is why it’s terrifyingly risky when Princess Hesina, desperate to find her father’s murderer, seeks out a soothsayer’s help. Centuries ago the rebels now known as the Eleven overthrew the corrupt empire of Yan and the soothsayers that used their power to hold down the weak and the poor. ![]()
